In Pictures: The Orbit Tower In The Olympic Park

On Friday, the ArcelorMilttal Orbit tower, the swooping red observation tower nestled between the main stadium and the Aquatics Centre, reached its full 114.5-metre height. Click through the gallery above to see how it looks.

The BBC has an interview with one of the architects who worked on the tower.

The structure won’t be finished until next year, but for now we can get a pretty good idea of how it looks on the east London skyline. It’s been one of the more controversial elements of the Olympic park, but now that it’s approaching completion, what do you think of it? Let us know.

I love it. It’s the one fun thing about the Olympic Park that makes me feel I want to visit it…

It’s an ugly waste of money, just like the rest of the olympics

I love the 80% of it Lakmir Mital paid for, much less keen on the bit Londoners are funding.

The £3.1 million from the LDA is tiny in the scheme of the Olympic budget, and the tower should be self-financing once finished. I wouldn’t have a problem with the cost if the thing weren’t so bloody ugly.

It’s not so much the quantity of money, as to the all to common habit BJ has of committing to things that will be privately funded, only to have us step in when his fund raising doesn’t quite cover this bill. (Cable Car, Orbit, NB4L, Mayors Fund, Cycle Hire and still counting).

In Building Design, Olly Wainwright has done a wonderful demolition (not literally) of the tower’s scatalogical leanings: http://www.bdonline.co.uk/buildings/arcellormittal-orbit-by-anish-kapoor-cecil-balmond-and-kathryn-findlay/5026971.article

I hate to be critical but I went past it today and I thought it looked so, so ugly – for me, so much of the design for the Olympics has been disappointing.
