The death of Min Joo Lee, hit by an HGV in Kings Cross on 3 October, is to be marked with the installation of a Ghost Bike at a public ceremony on Wednesday at 18:30.
Local cyclist James Thomas was moved to arrange the bike which has been provided with the help of the local Cycle Surgery. James is asking friends, campaigners and local people to join him to mark the installation - you can find event details here.
After our last post, reporting on local attempts to bring a charge of corporate manslaughter against the authority, TfL contacted us with a statement:
“It is a tragedy that a young cyclist has lost her life at this junction outside King's Cross, and we await the outcome of the ongoing police investigation into what happened. TfL monitors collisions on the roads we manage and in the past 3 years at this junction, there have been 2 serious collisions neither of which involved cyclists.
“Since 2008, TfL has maintained the road network outside King's Cross station and in 2009 we commissioned a report to specifically investigate what could be achieved to improve safety at the three junctions around the station.
"We are working to design a scheme which will benefit all road users including cyclists and pedestrians. Earlier this year, key stakeholders and the local community were consulted about these plans aiming to increase pedestrian capacity and implement safety improvements in time for the London 2012 Games. Detailed design work is now being finalised and work will begin later this year to be completed in spring 2012."
Responding to criticism that the 2009 report had made it clear that the junction should be redesigned Transport for London's Garrett Emmerson, Chief Operating officer of Streets, told the BBC that three years was a "sort of typical time" to deliver improvements of this sort (revised pavements and some new ASLs, PDF).
