Fancyapint Best London Pub Awards 2011

The Southampton Arms may have scooped CAMRA's pub of the year gong, but which hostelries lifted the gilded pint glasses from the Fancyapint reviewers and readers this year?

Overall Reviewers' Award Winner:

- Duke of Hamilton(Hampstead)
A new breath of life into this pub by the owners of the Barnsbury in Islington – a promise of well-kept ale and decent bar snacks is making this a superb local, as evidenced by winning the overall Reviewers' award.

Other Reviewers' Awards go to:

- The Dovetail Bar (Clerkenwell)
More a Belgian bar than a pub it nonetheless does many things right, including a good atmosphere, a good selection of continental brews and brilliant food.

- The Royal Oak (Borough)
Winner of several previous award from Fancyapint.com, the Royal Oak continues to provide top ales from Harveys, smashing food and a convivial atmosphere.

- The Sir Richard Steele (Primrose Hill)
A lively North London boozer with a loyal band of punters and lots going on, not to mention the beer.

- Wenlock Arms (City Road)
Under threat from developers (the usual threat, demolition and replacement by flats), this has been one of our favourites for a very long time. Once owned by the Wenlock Brewery, this may be your last chance to try it before it vanishes forever.

Best Newcomer:

- Mason & Taylor (Shoreditch)
A bar with a distinct emphasis on real ale, this sister bar to the Duke of Wellington in Dalston is doing most things right.

Most improved:

- The Draft House (Bermondsey)
Another pub for the real ale connoisseur, it also does a fine line in wines and excellent food. And with a decent interior, appeals to just about everyone.

Hall of Fame:

- The Royal Oak (Borough)
We've spent a lot of time in this pub over the years – in fact, the first Fancyapint.com awards were held in their upstairs room. Well deserving of inclusion in our Hall of Fame, as it's changed very little over the years, with great real ale and a pub food menu a lot of the pretenders could stand to imitate.

Overall Visitors' Award Winner

- Southampton Arms (Kentish Town) - Overall Winner
Our overall winner last year gets a much-deserved boost and has recently been named CAMRA's London Pub of the Year.

Other Vistors' Awards go to:

- The Banker (Cannon Street)
A City pub, but one with a difference. It's a Fuller's place, so the beer is well-kept and it doesn't get totally rammed with yahoos.

- Cask Pub and Kitchen (ex-Pimlico Tram) (Pimlico)
A modern pub, but one with a penchant for great beer and good food – great for a night out.

- Grenadier (Belgravia)
A sightly eccentric pub in the heart of Belgravia where a glass of wine is just as acceptable as a pint. AND it used to be Guy and Madonna's hangout in London.

- The Gunmakers (Clerkenwell)
Another old favourite, with excellent service, great food and a good range of guest ales regularly cycling through the pumps.

Agree, disagree? Let us know in the comments or mosey on over to Fancyapint.com where it's all about going to the pub. Cheers!
