Things To Do In London On The Cheap: 3-9 October

Monday: Cable Street Stories continue at Wilton's Music Hall with a video installation 'Crossing the Street' on show from 7.30pm (free).

The Grant Museum screens War of the Worlds on the big screen in the Darwin Lecture Theatre, UCL from 6.30pm. Take a tour of the museum after the film with a glass of wine (free).

Tuesday: World-renowned documentary photographer Shahidul Alam gives a free public talk at National Geographic Store, Regent's Street from 6pm

Wednesday: Take a lunchtime Knights Templar walk with InMidtown. Meet Holborn station 1pm, walk lasts 1 hour (free).

Dash Cafe at Rich Mix, Bethnal Green presents Hjaz; an inspired blend of Middle Eastern Song and Western Jazz, drawing on material from Lebanese legend Fayrouz, Arabic and Andalusian Mwashshahat, Sephardic songs from 7.30pm (free).

Thursday: Celebrate National Poetry Day live at the Royal Festival Hall between 1-6pm (free).

Hop on the First Thursday art bus or just take advantage of late gallery openings in east London.

Consider the link between Architecture and Happiness at the LSE public lecture from 6.30pm (free).

Friday: There's a Talk and Draw special at the National Gallery late opening tonight where you can sketch Burlesque life models between 6-7.30pm (free, first come first served).

The Portobello Pop-up Cinema under the Westway pays tribute to the founders of the Gate Cinema tonight, with a surprise film screening from 7.30pm (free).

Saturday: Watch Square Dances in Brunswick and Woburn Squares throughout the day. Tomorrow, catch it in Queen and Gordon Squares.

Sunday: It's Apple Day at Kennington's brilliant Roots and Shoots between 11am-4pm. Taste the 2011 vintage Orchard Bounty apple juice, participate in fruity workshops and there's bobbing for apples, apple-on-a-string, a peeling competition, corn dolly making and stories for the kids (adults £1, children free).
