New Folk Night Comes To Hackney

Kings Place may be at the vanguard of folk music programming in London, but informal pub and club nights are still going to be the heart of any folk scene.

Folk promoters The Magpie's Nest, formed in 2006 because of the lack of "places to see and hear good folk music in a contemporary environment," clearly feel that London's folk scene has space for a new weekly series. Hence 'Cocked-Ale' at the underground Manero's Bar on Kingsland Road, which launched with a regular Tuesday night spot at the beginning of September.

It should be a suitable venue for what is being billed as a "truly unplugged and intimate affair". In the good old folk music tradition, entrance is free but a hat is passed round for each artist on the bill. Artist-wise, there are four acts each week, which will no doubt lead to some impromptu artistic collaborations.
