Wifi For London Buses By 2012?

The London bus network could join 120 London Underground stations in the wonder of working wifi in 2012.

Virgin Media is apparently close to rolling out a basic free wifi service Londonwide. The company is working with London Councils on the project that would fulfill our Mayor's promise that city-wide wifi would be available in time for the Olympics.

Kulveer Ranger, Director of Environment and Digital London at City Hall, has now indicated that the bus network could be connected too. Coach services like Oxford Tube already have free wifi so the model is there. Sources suggest Virgin Media could "deploy the network for free by installing Wi-Fi broadband routers in their kerbside cabinets."

What's more, apps drawing on TfL's bus countdown datasets are on their way bringing real time bus journey info to whichever clever device you're packing.
