Things To Do In London On The Cheap: 26 August - 1 September

Friday: It's happening under canvas outside the National Theatre tonight for the Big Sleepover, with activities from 5.30pm (free).

Saturday: Book the kids into some creative and performing arts activities at Unicorn Theatre's U Fest (£5 a session).

The Carnival comes east with Rich Mix hosted all-dayer Carnival Mix starting with Soca Aerobics but moving onto film screenings and live music from midday till late (free).

The beach comes to Penge Rec' for the weekend (free).

Take a guided musical 'Sounds of the Suburb' walk through Bloomsbury from 1pm (£5).

Women-only can experience magical, storytelling on Hampstead Heath from 7pm (free but book!)

Sunday: It's 'Kids Day' for Notting Hill Carnival from 9am with parade and the steel band and costume competitions (free).

In Shoreditch, The Book Club throw a street party with Bookstock from midday (free with wristband).

Camden's Lock Tavern hosts a Pump Up The Volume 90s hip hop all-afternooner from 3pm (free).

The Alternative Village Fete sets up on Southbank today and Monday (free).

Take a picnic to the Summertime Proms concert at Central Park, East Ham from 6.30pm (free).

Cycle into the cinema at Hackney City Farm for Princess Bride at 8pm (free but suggested donation £5).

If you'd rather shelter indoors, watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles at the Victoria pub (free).

Bank Holiday Monday: August Bank Holiday Monday is the main Notting Hill Carnival day with the procession starting at around 9am and finishing by 7pm (free).

Join the Slow Food picnic on Parliament Hill (free).

Under 16s go free to cricket at Lords (adults £5).

Dance and singalonga Grease at Dulwich Picture Gallery from 6.30pm (£6).

Tuesday: Mad bands Citizens, Carl White and Gold Bars play Hoxton's Macbeth (free).

Wednesday: Museum of London photography curator Mike Seaborne chats to photographers about the exhibition Street Photography Now from 6.30pm (£6).

Thursday: Portobello Film Festival has its grand opening tonight at the pop-up cinema, Acklam Road W10 (free).
