Free Tram Travel To Put Croydon Back In Business

There's free travel on the Croydon tram network this weekend - 20 and 21 August - and free or discounted parking around the town centre to encourage shoppers back.

Croydon was badly damaged by riots. The image of House of Reeves furniture store at Reeves Corner burning down was a depressing staple of rolling news the night of Monday 8 August. Flickr friend McTumshie had to walk to work through the centre of Croydon the morning after as overhead tram wires had been damaged. Have a look at his photos of the aftermath.

TfL have taken the opportunity to remind Croydon that six new air conditioned trams are on their way to Tramlink for early next year. Retailers are also punting special offers to lure the community back with discounts and free play and face painting for kids.

Local football club Crystal Palace have also pledged to distribute one thousand free tickets to families affected by riot damage and the emergency services who attended the scene, to the match against Blackpool on 27 August.
