Silent Hitchcock Films To Be Restored And Soundtracked

At least three of Alfred Hitchcock's earliest films will be given new orchestral scores as part of the London 2012 Festival. The rarely-seen movies date from the 1920s and will be restored by the BFI ahead of screenings next year.

Indian-British composer Nitin Sawhney will add a soundtrack to The Lodger: A Story Of The London Fog (1926) with the aid of the London Symphony Orchestra. Recent graduate Daniel Cohen will put together some tunes for Hitchcock's first film The Pleasure Garden (1925). A third, as-yet undisclosed, film will be enlivened by composer Tansy Davies. Further commissions may follow. The newly spruced movies will be screened at a Hitchcock retrospective in autumn next year.

Hitchcock was, of course, a London boy, growing up on the fringes of what is now the Olympic Park in Leytonstone. You'll find a set of mosaics celebrating his extraordinary career in the local Tube station.
