Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

The Royal Society has been in the business of organising events for 351 years. You may remember its South Bank extravaganza last year, which saw model pterodactyls swooping down on the Royal Festival Hall, and hundreds of scientists filling spaces normally occupied by the arts.

Its Summer Science exhibition returns to London today, with six days of free events and exhibiting ahead. It's basically a chance for anyone and everyone to have a chat with some leading scientists and get a glimpse of the future. Here's what to expect, in efficient, lab notebook-style bullet points:

  • 22 exhibition stalls, each revealing a fascinating area of British research.
  • Hundreds of scientists, willing and able to explain their fields in a friendly and jargon-free way.
  • Loads of hands-on exhibits to play with.
  • Cutting-edge ideas that could have real impacts on society. Themes include artificial sight, invisibility cloaks, a satnav for keyhole surgeons, quantum computing and new ways to harness wind power.
  • A chance to explore the opulent halls and corridors of the Royal Society.
  • Several drop-in events to further stimulate the mind.

It's all free and you can simply turn up and walk in during opening hours. You'll find the Royal Society at 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, SW1Y 5AG...right next to the ICA and The Mall.
