Treasures Of London's Waterways

The Waterways Treasure Map, a new interactive map created by Thames 21, allows you to discover and add waterway treasures in the four London boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham, Ealing and Hounslow − more boroughs are to be added soon.

You can click on treasure icons or search for a particular area by postcode, to reveal natural beauty spots along the city's rivers and canals, details of wildlife in the area, or items of historical interest.

By logging in, users can add their own 'treasures', which can be anything from your favourite river spot, to a site in need of care − which Thames21 will then find volunteers to fix.

Thames21 is looking for people to join the Waterway Treasure Map Steering Group, and help shape the next phase of the map. For more info, or to get involved contact Ben.

The organisation campaigns to keep London's many historic waterways flowing. Volunteers can get involved in clean-up operations and public information days all around London over the next ten days. In particular, they are focusing on the appalling state of the Lee, London's second largest river, which flows through Hackney, Tottenham and Clapton.

East London waterways photo competition

You also have until 30 July to enter the Thames21 photographic competition − submit your high-res images of East London's rivers and canals to be in with a chance of winning a £100 Amazon voucher, and have your photograph featured in the 2012 Thames21 calendar. Finalists will also feature in a special exhibition at the Miller’s House Cafe, Three Mills Lane, this summer.
