Preview: London Map Fair

What is billed as Europe's largest antiquarian map fair takes place at the Royal Geographical Society all weekend. The London Map Fair will display maps from the 15th-20th Centuries, with plenty of cartographic delights for sale (£10-£100,000). Offerings include the earliest printed plan of London (1574) and a 17th Century guide to the London to Portsmouth road (now the A3) showing key landmarks...a sort of Restoration-era satnav. The Indy have a pleasant slide-show to whet your mappetite.

The Map Fair is one of many events cuddling under the umbrella of the London Mapping Festival, which launched earlier this week and runs until the end of 2012. The full programme is still under planning, but includes a touring map exhibition, a hook up with London Transport Museum, geocaching days and plenty of talks and courses. You never know, we might even put on our own map-based event.

The London Map Fair is at the Royal Geographical Society on 11 and 12 June. 12-7pm (Sat), 10-5pm (Sun). Here's a map, in case you need it!
