Do We Want Eddie Izzard As Mayor of London?

Misleading headline of the day. ‘LBC Exclusive: Eddie Izzard to Run For Mayor’.

A more accurate version might read: ‘LBC Last to Hear: Eddie Izzard Might Run for Mayor Eventually’.

Talking non-exclusively to the radio station, the comedian repeated a line he’s said many times before, that he’ll one day run as an MP, MEP or Mayor of London, but not for about nine years.

Izzard is noted for his political engagement. He’s a regular campaigner on issues such as Europe and the Alternative Vote, and is a proud supporter of the Labour Party. He also has experience in leading London during a crisis:

      Not strictly true, but the worst part about having Boris as mayor is that he hasn’t been able to do Have I Got News For You anymore. Becoming Mayor of London clearly dents your ability as a comic, so no thanks please.

    Eddie Izzard is vile. The night that Labour got elected in 1997 I was at the Royal Festival Hall. The place was in uproar. Everyone was ecstatic, dancing around the place and congratulating total strangers. I turned around and happened to find Izzard right next to me. Just everyone else, I grinned at him, said ‘congratulations’ and offered him a handshake. Unlike everybody else, Izzard recoiled, sneered at me and made a huge pantomime of showing his contempt. He was clearly conveying that he was terribly important, and I was being over-familiar. The thought of Izzard still makes my skin crawl.

    Please no.  I love his shows, have probably watched all of them and they make me laugh like a drain.  But I unfollowed him on Twitter after about five minutes because when he’s not being funny, he’s not funny at all.

    He isn’t going to be Mayor of London. The Labour Party are taking advantage of a man with a lot of money, a giant ego and a great deal less intellect than he likes to imagine, by letting him think he’ll be their candidate. Anyone who really understands politics knows that, barring all accidents, they’ll choose David Lammy – and a good thing, too.
