Dance Around London: June 2011

Our pick of the London dance scene for the month ahead

Dave St-Pierre: Un peu de tendresse bordel de merde
If you thought the Canadians were a shy retiring bunch you obviously haven’t encountered Dave St-Pierre. Finally making his debut at Sadler’s Well’s after many performances in Europe, Un peu de tendresse bordel de merde (A Little Tenderness for Crying Out Loud!) has made its way London. If you feel uncomfortable at the thought of 20 naked dancers on stage read Judith Mackrell’s interviews with seasoned nude performers in the Guardian
Sadler's Wells, 2 – 4 June, tickets £10-£27

The London Ballet Company: Citius, Altius, Fortius
Ever thought ballet training looked like a harsh athletic regime? The London Ballet Company do and with their new show Citius, Altius, Fortius they are out to inform us of the parallels between dance and athletics.
Kings Head Theatre, 2, 9, 16, 23 June, tickets £17.50-£22.50/£15 concs

Michael Clark Company, Part II - New Work
Confession: we are big fans of Michael Clark. An acquired taste he might be but given the awesome setting of the Tate Modern Turbine Hall and the mystique of a brand new commission, involving members of the public as well as his own dancers, this is a hot ticket, a must see, a shell out that money now, kind of event. See you there.
Tate Modern, 8-12 June, tickets £30/£25 concs

Glasgow's Barrowland Ballet and East London Dance presents: Conversations with Carmel
If all that Tate Modern stuff sounds a bit overblown to you, try this production featuring dancers of all ages, including those drawn from the local community, inspired 'by the chaos of family gatherings'.
Stratford Circus, 8 June, tickets £12/£8 concs.

Jasmin Vardimon Company: Yesterday
A dance retrospective is rare, yet Jasmin Vardimon’s Yesterday, created for the company’s 10 year anniversary, is a great way to see snippets of great choreography. Vardimon’s work is hard hitting, funny dance drama and this mash up pulls together all the best bits for just over an hour’s entertainment
Sadler's Wells 9-10 June, tickets £10 - £22

English National Ballet: Strictly Gershwin
Fancy a bit of Fred and Ginger? Head to the Royal Albert Hall for the English National Ballet’s Strictly Gershwin. Complete with a live jazz orchestra Strictly Gershwin will be turning the clocks back to the thirties. Look out for guest performers Tamara Rojo, Friedemann Vogel and Guillaume Côté who will be adding to the razzmatazz of the big band era.
Royal Albert Hall, 9 – 19 June, tickets £19.50 - £65.00
