Our pick of the exciting theatre, dance, opera and art shows opening in London this week


Be There First: London Shows Opening

Theatre biggies: Tonight The Beggar's Opera opens at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre and The Railway Children returns to the abandoned Eurostar terminal at Waterloo for a summer run, starring Marcus Brigstocke. On Wednesday, Kevin Spacey's Richard III opens at the Old Vic.

Playwright debut: Penelope Skinner's The Village Bike opens Upstairs at the Royal Court on Friday with £10 tickets available on the day of performance.

Contemporary dance: les ballets C de la B perform Gardenia at Sadler's Wells from 29 June-2 July.

Photography: The first London Street Photography Festival opens on 1 July with exhibitions throughout Kings Cross, including the first Vivian Maier show at the German Gymnasium and photos of 1940s street markets at the British Library.

Exhibitions: Sitting and Looking examines connections between fine art, furniture, design and craft at Somerset House which opens on Wednesday and it's free. London in Black and White is a display of images from the London Metropolitan Archives in the West Walkway of Tower Bridge, opening Thursday. Local schoolkids have been involved in creating The Stuff of Nightmares at the V&A Museum of Childhood, which looks at the darker side of fairy tales and opens Saturday, free admission.

Last Chance To See: London Shows Closing

Curtain comes down on ENO's A Midsummer Night's Dream on Thursday. The last Where's My Seat at the new Bush Theatre is on Saturday, as is the final performance of A Delicate Balance at Almeida, Islington. The Royal Opera's Peter Grimes and The Merchants of Bollywood at Peacock Theatre both end on Sunday.
