Ticket Alert: Gigs on Sale This Morning

It’s the big rush for V Festival tickets this morning, so other onsales are a little thin on the ground. Still, here’s our pick of London gigs. All should be available from around 9am.

  • Janet Jackson (sans wardrobe malfunction, we assume) takes her glossy act to the Albert Hall on 30 June and 2 July. It might not be for everyone, but with a set of 35 number ones promised (number one where, exactly, we’re not sure), there are bound to be plenty of takers.
  • Ex-Beatle and fanmail-ranter Ringo Starr heads to Hampton Court Palace on 17 June with his ‘All-Starr Band’. See what they did there? Expect the Fab Four drummer to play songs from throughout his career. Tickets available here.
  • Ah, this is more like it. There’s quite a buzz building around captivating Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li’s second album. She’ll be capitalising on what will presumably be a bunch of summer festival performances with a big show at The Roundhouse on 1 November. Get your tickets here.
  • Somewhat better known in their home country of South Africa than they are over here, Springbok Nude Girls are a loud alt-rock group who first came together in the early ’90s. Expect the Castle Lager to flow on 4 June at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Tickets from here.
  • Trance DJ Armin van Buuren claims to run an online radio show with 30 million listeners. And he’s coming to Brixton Academy on 23 April. If BPM is how you measure your music then you’ll want to get a ticket here.

Also booking now: Young Knives at XOYO, Art Brut at The Lexington, Lou Reed at Hammersmith Apollo and The Feeling at Heaven.

As a bit of an aside if comedy is or ever was the new rock n roll, tickets go on sale this morning for Stephen Merchant’s Hello Ladies UK Tour, culminating in 4 nights at the Hammersmith Apollo 28-30 November and 1 December. Tickets for his work in progress gigs at the Bloombury Theatre sold out in a ridiculously big rush so get in quick.

“Janet Jackson It might not be for everyone” —— Janet Jackson is the only artist in Billboard history to have #1 songs on the R&B,POP,Hip Hop,Dance, and Rock Charts so yeah its for EVERYONE.

“but with a set of 35 number ones promised (number one where, exactly, we’re not sure)” ——– WTH? are the writers on this site 11 years old? Janet 35 number ones comes from US Billboard charts if you don’t believe it go to billboard.com its not very hard to do.Your attempt to try and make a Joke about Janet and make her seem less than she is FAILED! Janet is a huge part of music history and is the greatest female performer IN HISTORY.

Mr. McGarvey: Do bloggers like you write ridiculous opinions-veiled-as-fact just to get hits on these websites or do you really believe this tripe about Janet Jackson? Janet Jackson has attained her status as the 11th best selling artist in the history of music by working hard at her craft. American music critic David Ritts compared the Rhythm Nation and Janet albums to Marvin Gaye’s Whats Goin On and Lets Get It On, mentioning that Janet’s decision to follow up an album primarily about society’s ills with the sexual liberation of Janet paralleled Gaye’s best work. The Velvet Rope is a complex and musically daring album that was a complete departure for her at the time. She has collaborated with some of the best producers of the industry and, despite the decline in sales due to that ridiculous non-issue of her showing a breast to the world (whether intentional or not) had more to do with her declining sales rather then a lack of quality in her music. She became a scapegoat for a country that needed distraction during an unpopular and most likely illegal war, and the media was happy to oblige. Janet’s live shows get consistently fantastic reviews and this new tour at the age of 44 is no exception. Janet has earned over 100 million dollars because she has consistently put out quality product that has influenced millions. She has always worked hard, promoting every project as if she were new and hungry in the music industry. She deserves your respect, rather then your shrill and cynical rehashing of a non event. Do some research before you write your blogs and try to have some nuance!!

    Hi Non_ya_bizniz, Robert,

    Thanks for the comments.

I think citing the ‘wardrobe malfunction’ is reasonable, as it’s the biggest thing Janet Jackson has hit the headlines for in recent years. Not everyone will be familiar with her entire career, so mentioning this fact is a good way to remind people who the artist in question is.

As for the ‘number ones’ comment, it was meant to indicate that despite lots of chart toppers in the US and other parts of the world, Jackson hasn’t had many (or, from what I can see, any) number one singles here in the UK. That’s all, and I’m sorry if it could have been clearer.

I stand by my comment that Jackson is ‘not for everyone’. Like every other musical act in history, I’m sure she’s not. However, I also don’t doubt that she’ll put a show on at the Albert Hall, and that’s why she was included in this ‘pick of London gigs’.

    John.
