The Olympic Stadium has been completed on time, under budget and with an exemplary safety record. Cupcakes all round!

Andy Wilkes took new photos inside the Olympic Park yesterday, including signs of the rising Orbit sculpture.

This deserved an awful lot more coverage than it got, I reckon. Great effort by all concerned.

Although if I was paying the bills… and I am… I’d wonder whether it needed completing this quickly. What are they going to do with it for the next year or so, wander around hoovering it I guess?

Quite, Lewis, presumably they’ll be renting it out between now and the Games to recoup the huge cost to the taxpayer?

The first test events in the stadium are in May 2012. Construction might be done but I expect there’s quite a lot of fitting out to be done between now and then.

Oh, of course. It was more a point about saying ‘completed’ if it isn’t yet.

Lindsey, thanks for the mention and links. ;) x

    “On time and under budget”.

Not quite. The stadium’s original projected budget, when London was bidding for the Games, was £282 million mark. The final cost was £468 million.

It’s a pity that, like most other media outlets, Londonist has simply chosen to parrot the press release.
