Olympic Park Now Visible On Google Maps

The world's most expensive pound store?

The various construction projects that make up the Olympic Park are now visible on satellite view in Google Maps.

Though the images aren’t completely up-to-date — to judge by the state of the main stadium and the Velodrome, they’re a few months old — they illustrate from an aerial perspective the scale of the park and how it fits into the wider area. Unsurprisingly, the team behind Street View haven’t yet been able to poke their car-mounted cameras around the park.

Unfortunately, Google’s automated tagging system (or a rogue engineer with a sense of humour) has resulted in a few gremlins. For example, scroll over to the £242 million Aquatic Centre, and you’ll see it listed as ‘Poundland’. The nearby Olympic Stadium, which is marked ‘Climate Centre’, appears to have Marshgate Lane boring through its western flank. Still, it’s not quite as odd as the time Google geo-located Tessa Jowell in the Houses of Parliament.

Looks like most of London has been updated.

The Shard is new, and a lot of recentish building works around Docklands and Nth Greenwich are on there now, which weren’t before.

Also the new ast London line – you used to be able to trace the old railway out of Broad Street/Broadgate along the route no occupied by the ELL north of Great Eastern St, which was a nice bit of history.

Hopefully Google Earth will allow users to roll back the years as it’ll be interesting to compare the tow sets of images – can’t access it at work though so will have to wait.

    Pah, stupid typos. Soory.

If you want to look at old aerial views, Yahoo Maps is the place to go. Their images are so old that the rear extension to St Pancras is only half built, and the Olympic stadium is still an industrial estate. It’s a bitch if, like me, you want to geolocate your photos in Flickr.

Someone should make a plaque stating a pound shop once stood here but local buisness was driven out to make way for some excessive sporting event!

Fundamentalist Christian conservative extremist Eric Rudolph bombed the Olympic Park during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, wounding and killing civilians and wounding dozens more.
