London On The Cheap: 3-9 February

Tonight: First Thursdays return with free art to enjoy across east London. Try Meta Architecture at Lo & Behold, 2b Swanfield Street E2 for an installation of video, drawings and a zine-like publication, between 6-9pm.

Take cake to the Firestation Bookswap, on tour at the London Review Bookshop, and get in free to enjoy chat, random questions and other people's books from 7pm.

Folk Rising at Cecil Sharp House, NW1 is just £5 admission for a night of full on folk courtesy of Magpie's Nest.

Friday: Exploding Cinema does a thing with short film, booze and music from Cozmik Onion Field at The Others, 6-8 Manor Road, Stoke Newington N16 from 8pm-midnight, £5 entry.

Saturday: Join London Transport Museum's Flickr scavenger hunt round Croydon, exploring the area around the new Overground station for West Croydon. Free but register via the Flickr group.

A "read in" to save Crofton Park Library, SE4 starts at 11.30am. The Guardian has a map of all 'save our libraries' protests across London and the UK.

Sunday: Trafalgar Square celebrations for Chinese New Year start from 11am and go on till 6pm but there will be plenty to see, do and eat to welcome the Year of the Rabbit all over Chinatown.

Visit the Hackspace Open Day and tinker with creative arts whilst talking to other makers and doers. From 1-6pm, free at Cremer Business Centre, E2 8HD.

Monday: Social Media Week starts today! Most events are free but do require booking. Check out the schedule.

Get ready to cheer and say "Hello Jeff!" because the After School Club is back! The very friendly comedy club that's always laced in cake returns with 6 ace acts for just £5 from 8pm, upstairs at the Camden Head, NW1.

Tuesday: Favela Chic on Great Eastern Street, EC2 presents the first Wordamouth of 2011 with "London's freshest poets" followed by hip hop, dub, soul and breaks. Free entry, from 7.30pm.

Wednesday: Crystal Palace Green drinks will be cheap if you stick to the lime and soda (green hued, therefore, thematic) at The Grape and Grain, Anerley Hill, SE19 2AA from 8pm.

How are you having frugal fun this week? Let us know in the comments.
