Jubilee ‘The New Misery Line’

The beleaguered Jubilee line has been branded the ‘new misery line’ by an MP following a catalogue of delays and breakdowns.

‘It’s such an acute problem that you would’ve thought it was something that the Mayor would do something about, but he hasn’t. It’s a disgrace to London,’ said David Winnick today.

The MP is the latest person to criticise the line after a breakdown earlier this month apparently made Boris Johnson ‘incandescent’ with rage. We reported back at the end of 2009 that the irritating and seemingly ceaseless weekend closures would extend into 2010 and so they did, though it did at least galvanise the mayor into action and he brought the failing Tube Lines enterprise under the TfL umbrella in an attempt to improve matters which we kind of think counts as doing something about the problem.

While this will hopefully prevent TfL from being held hostage again in the long term, there are still a number of short term problems for them (and therefore us) to contend with though last November they did promise the Jubilee line would be ready this spring. TfL, despite following the time-honoured tradition practiced by politicians of blaming the disarray on the previous management, say their new signaling system is in use and ‘significant progress has been made’.

Why is it that the issue of public transport can only ever be discussed in terms of political point-scoring hyperbole?

A few broken down trains and delayed journeys does not a misery make. I use the Jubilee on most days, and it’s annoying when there are problems, but that’s life. Once the switchover to the usual signal has taken place, hopefully by spring as promised, they will be able to run a higher capacity service (due to trains being able to travel closer together) and commuters will forget about the current teething problems.

Blaming it on Boris is ridiculous; he’s the one who stepped in and got TfL to take over the disastrous Tube Lines contract which — lest we forget — was put into place by Labour.

The fact that this MP still refers to the Northern as the ‘misery line’ — when it’s been in pretty decent condition for years now — suggest how out of touch he is.

Jubilee as a “misery line”? How about the met line? You can far more easily tell which are met line commuters – they’re the ones sitting on buses or riding Boris bikes to work. They’ve gone beyond misery all the way to despair, and are now on resignation. Talking of resignation, Boris and his TfL cronies: maybe that’s the way forward for you too, given the shambolic turn the tube has taken?

Significant progress? Anyone who has had the misfortune of using the line during February (during peak times) will know it’s been worse than ever before…and as you point out, no sign of the weekend closures halting. Anyway, hope all the negative publicity gets them to sort their sh*t out.

  • Frustrated man!

Oh fuck off Jean Micheal Genre! Get a grip you twat! It’s some small problems. You try being a CSA and dealing with you bunch of twats every day!

The District line is the real misery line, surely.

Not because it doesn’t work – because even when it does it takes seven or eight years to get anywhere.
