Exhibition Review: A’ Urban Abstract by Remi/Rough and Steve More

Everything at Once. Mixed Media. Steve More

Opening tonight and running only until 6 February, A’ Urban Abstract features works by Remi/Rough and Steve More, a couple of movers and shakers in the urban abstract movement. The show offers two divergent styles that nonetheless seem to play off the other with mutual respect and appreciation. An uncompromising mix of graffiti grit and studio contemplation, the exhibition’s focus on self-expression and gorgeous colour draws the viewer in, allowing you to come to your own conclusions. Those in the arty-know, but perhaps unaware of Remi and More wouldn’t be amiss to expect paintings and mixed media pieces along the lines of Jose Parla and a less figurative Adam Neate.

You’ve got less than a week to check out A’ Urban Abstract at Blackall Studios (73a Leonard Street, EC2A 4QS). Visit the exhibition’s Facebook page for more details.

Chris – I think you are more than missing the mark by mentioning any similarity between Remi & More to Jose Parla or Adam Neate.

While Parla & Neate sometimes get clumped in with other Urban Artists, most in the “arty-know” would disagree with your assessment – which comes off a little PR’ish for the show by trying to capitalise on bigger artists’ names.

Seriously? Well, there’s definitely an argument against the Adam Neate comparison but I think both of the showing artists have a good bit in common with Parla. Anyway, wasn’t trying to capitalise just to think of more notable names that fit with the artists’ style to give people a sense of what to expect.

I got a sneak peak of the show last night. I liked it and I reckon some of that enthusiasm spilled into the review. It’s definitely worth checking out.

I’m excited to check out the show – no question! Just found your comparison to be a stretch. Remi & More’s work is totally different imho.

Did you make it to the PV last night? Would love to know what you think about the show.

I think I was more suggesting similarities in style than comparing quality of the art. There’s certainly an urgency to Parla’s work that’s singular.
