Doors Open On Moving Tube Train

TfL has launched an investigation after a set of doors at the rear of a Victoria line train apparently opened while it was travelling between stations.

The incident, news of which the BBC’s Tom Edwards broke this morning, happened last night when the train was pulling to a stop at a red signal whilst heading south into Brixton station. The train in question was one of the older vehicles, and not the recently-introduced new stock (which has had teething troubles of its own). The doors were closed immediately, and according to TfL, it was the result of driver error (though we’ve little doubt that Bob Crow will spin it into being the fault of Tube cutbacks).

Nobody was injured, but it doesn’t take much imagination to see what would happen if the doors of a speeding train were opened during rush hour. It’s also surprising that the train doesn’t appear to have been fitted with a device to prevent the doors opening while in motion; perhaps a more technically adroit reader can let us know what (if any) safety measures are in place.

The 67 stock doesn’t have any mechanism to prevent the doors from being opened while the train is in motion – the only safeguard is that two separate buttons need to be pressed to open the doors while only one to close it.
This also happened at a signal outside Seven Sisters station a few months ago.

Thanks for that, Bob. Does the 09 stock (and other more recent Tube stock) have any newer safety measures? Not that this is a regular occurrence by any means, but it’d be interesting to know.

2009 Tube Stock is fitted with a CSDE system that prevents the doors from being opened on the wrong side. A part of how this CSDE system works means that the doors cannot be opened outside of the ‘target zone’ and the doors will not open unless this system is over-ridden.

Forgot to note that the 67s are the only trains not equipped with CSDE. The way the system works varies slightly between some lines but has the same effect.

There are millions of successful journeys each year. This is one tiny incident which has been blown out of proportion by the sensationlist and scandilous press.

There’s no hype in this story, it’s just describing what happened. I travel on the Victoria line every day and I want to know about potential safety issues.
