Holborn is full of famous old pubs - from the Princess Louise to the Citie of Yorke. A new exhibition at Arts Gallery (272 High Holborn) appears to have scalped the drinking holes of other neighbourhoods. A selection of hanging pub signs bearing the names of familiar London inns will deck the walls of this small gallery until 5 March in an exhibition called The Golden Glassy.

Artist Sroop Sunar created the signs in an 'aesthetic of everyday Asian consumer goods'. "My creative work takes inspiration from a particular design culture unique to India. I wanted to use that perspective to explore Britain’s social history. I’m interested in the significance in a pub name to a particular place or region and how this is communicated using the simplicity of the pub sign as a basic, practical function.”

Pub signs 'authority' David Roe be in conversation with the artist on 21 February (6.30-8.30pm) at the Arts Gallery. It's a free event with booking required via [email protected].

Bottoms-up!
