Snow: Another Morning Of Commuting No Fun

If you’ve got no place to go, today is a textbook winter wonderland in London. If, like most people, you’ve got to travel in for work, well the going is still tough. It seems to have been pretty widely established that certain train companies are, let’s say, playing coy with information, so your best bet is to get updates from Twitter.

The rail networks are, of course, most severely affected. Southern trains have NO SERVICES WHATSOEVER until 10am, and then only if you’re lucky (follow on Twitter). Southeastern have some services, but reports don’t look good (follow on Twitter). FirstCapitalConnect has reasonable, if crowded, services from north of London, but the route down to Brighton is completely blocked (follow on Twitter). Other operators appear to be doing relatively well, but let us know in the comments if you’ve had other experiences.

The Tube is mostly working, although ‘severe delays’ are affecting the Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Jubilee (to compound problems for the south-east).

The DLR is reportedly working fine. However, because it’s about the only thing that is, some stations and trains are suffering overcrowding.

Buses? Other vehicles? You tell us.

Followed SouthWest Trains advice and checked their website before I set out. Website said all trains were running ok and no special services (Yes, it was probably naive). 20 minutes drive through snow later and all the trains are delayed/canceled or overcrowded. Managed to get one 45 minutes later fortunately.

I totally appreciate it’s a difficult time for the train companies, but I’m sure I’m not the only one making journeys based on their online information.

No problems on the Central line this morning and even managed to get a seat so it looks like a lot of people have stayed at home. The roads are a lot less busy too.

Two buses and two tubes later and I am only in an hour late. Not as bad as I thought from South London

No trains at all on Orpington to Victoria line – buses rare and packed to the gills and not stopping. East London line down too………..

My journey was no more difficult than it normally is.

The lesson here, I think, is quit whining, and live in zone one.

C2C in and out of Fenny Street are running, but with some delays of about 20 mins.

I travel from Brixton to Horchurch to come in for work which is a round journey of about 40 miles. Some lazy so and so’s who live just down the road haven’t bothered coming in to work.

    Bitter? Moi?

No problems on my bike this morning. Apart from some slippery ice underlying the snow in Victoria Park, and one icy turn going left from Fenchurch Street into Philpot Lane in the City, I was fine.I was eleven minutes late due to deliberations over whether it is possible to ride a bike in Wellington Boots (turns out it is), a particularly interesting feature on Radio 4′s Today programme, and riding slower in icy areas to avoid any sharp braking, but I am sure I will make that by not wanting to go out in the cold this evening. Thanks for your interest.

Total travel CHAOS getting in from Central Line Zone 6.

I walked to the station – took a whole two minutes longer than usual due to slippery pavements. Then stood on the platform for THREE minutes waiting for a train. Got a seat but sat next to someone weariung a HUGE coat. Then walked to the office – bit cold, isn’t it?

NXEA from Colchester to Liv St, bit more crowed than usual due to a norwich train cancelled but otherwise fine, then central and viccy lines all working fine, ended up getting in 10mins earlier than normal!
