The Youth Food Movement (YFM) is an international network of young(ish*) people who are passionate about good, proper, fair and ethical food. The group comprises chefs, farmers, students, artisans and activists and is open to anyone who shares the group’s goals.
Key focuses of the UK movement as it stands are passing on traditional food production skills through ‘SkillShares’, educating young people across the country about food and where it comes from, and confronting food issues in the UK head on, seeking to change the current food and farming industry where it’s the supermarkets that have all the power.
In the last couple of years, the YFM UK have built up quite a following, primarily via social networks such as Facebook, as well as their affiliation with Slow Food. Now they’re taking the next step by opening up office space and HQ in central London. They’re setting up shop within The People’s Supermarket (a co-operative set up by chef Arthur Potts-Dawson and run by its members, watch a video about it works here). Tomorrow night is the launch of the new premises, and anyone who’s interested is welcome to pop-in and join the celebrations. There’ll be drinks from supporters Vestal Vodka and Cornish oysters to sample as well as plenty of opportunity to find out more about the YFM, The People’s Supermarket and how to get involved. *In case any of you were wondering, all ages are welcome to join – “Youth” is not an age requirement; it’s a conscious response to the culture in which a generation of young people is coming of age.
