Snag Hits National Theatre Revamp

3009_nt.jpg The widow of Denys Lasdun, the architect who built the National Theatre on the South Bank, has lodged a last-minute complaint about the proposed plan to renovate the building. Susan Lasdun, who is backed by a coterie of architects styling themselves the "Lasdun Group", believes that the £70 million scheme by Haworth Tompkins (full details of which are here) is missing a trick by not restoring the originally planned entranceway; the group also believe that a plan to introduce a scenery workshop would "permanently damage" the building. Despite these objections, the project is likely to go ahead as is, as both Cabe and English Heritage have welcomed it. Update: The project was given planning permission by Lambeth council last night.
