Pope Tickets Still Available

Fewer people than expected have booked places to glimpse Benedict XVI at a vigil in Hyde Park this Saturday. The Pope’s fallible ticketing strategy has reportedly seen the event downgraded from 60,000 to 50,000 – or, to put it another way, he’s attracting about two-thirds of the number who turned up to watch Millwall topple Swindon Town in last season’s League One play-off final. Capacity for the open-air mass in Glasgow has also been reduced to counter the holy hole. This is the first time in a generation that the Catholic spiritual leader has visited our sceptred isle, and has drawn as much scorn as joy because of ongoing arguments concerning women priests, child abuse, policing costs and the ‘serious global public health problem‘ caused by the church’s opposition to small tubes of rubber. Correction (15:15): the figures quoted above for the Hyde Park vigil are actually for the Pope’s appearance in Birmingham. Ticket sales for Hyde Park are still lower than expected, however.

    Shouldn’t the police arrest him?

No, they shouldn’t, for various reasons discussed all over the everywhere already.

homophobic Nazis are not welcome. Thats why people arnt coming.

Of all the slurs you can throw at the current Pope, calling him a Nazi is the weakest — like every German of his age at the time, he was forced to join the Hitler Youth. He was not an enthusiastic member.

    Nonsense Dean!

Of course it’s a pertinent point about his moral compass. By the child you shall know the man. Plenty of german teenagers took a stand and refused to join, at the risk of their own civil future, and indeed life in some cases. Shouldn’t we expect at least this from the background of “God Representative on Earth”. But no, in his chest beats the heart of a collaborator at best.

It shows that his instinct lies with the maintenance of the status quo, even if that status quo is the most evil in human history. It should come as no surprise to us then that in all the decades that he was responsible for internal discipline at the church that he chose to focus on rooting out homosexual priests but was at least complicit in the cover up of thousands of cases of child abuse.

HE is the very man who if he had been doing the job he should have been doing all those years could have headed off this crisis, rescued countless children from lives of torture and self-loathing and in the process saved the Church he was misguidedly trying to protect. But he didn’t, because when it comes down to it his heart is in the wrong place.

I’m not Catholic but if I were I would feel this even more strongly than I do:

He is the LAST person on earth that I would want to watch heading up the “My Church Right Or Wrong Jamboree Tour”
