The project to turn the Commonwealth Institute in Kensington into the new home of the Design Museum has received a boost with a £300,000 development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Not a huge sum for a scheme which will cost a fair few million more, but it's a sign that the HLF approves of the project, and may consider favourably the full application for a £4.9 million grant. Plans for the redesign of the Grade II* listed Institute, closed since 2003, were released last year; the interior is being masterminded by John Pawson, whose exhibition at the Museum's current home could give clues on his approach to the new build.
