More than one million people convened on the streets around west London for the Notting Hill carnival over the weekend. As ever, milling about the throng, were regular contributors to Londonist's Flickr pool. A selection of their excellent photographs is presented above.

Future sociologists may find it interesting that, in the early 21st century, the success of an event is judged by how many (or few) crimes are recorded; still, the 2010 edition of Europe's biggest street party has been branded just that, after reported crime fell by more than a third. Police arrested nearly 300 people over the two-day festival, mostly for drug-related offences, although two people were stabbed and four arrested for carrying firearms.
