Hire Bike Users Being Overcharged

TfL has confessed to what anecdotal evidence has long pointed to: namely, that thousands of people have been wrongly overcharged whilst riding Cycle Hire bikes. The exact figure remains a mystery: a spokesperson said that “a couple of thousand” of the 40,000 members have been affected, which (even if taken at the low end) represents a significant chunk of current users — they’ll want to get it sorted before the scheme is extended to non-members. Most of the inaccurate charges were under £10, and TfL claim that they are taking steps to ensure who has had rogue sums added to their bill is properly compensated.

and over-charging is far from the only thing they need to get sorted. The whole admin side of the scheme is nothing but a big fat joke.

The only problem I’ve thus encountered (couldn’t get a bike out when the system was down but was charged for beginning an access period) was resolved after a quick call to the helpline.

You’re right, though, that this “rebooting” of the system seems to happen at very inconvenient times.
