An article in yesterday's Sunday Times (subscription only, thanks to Mr. Murdoch) claims that Boris Johnson has threatened to resign as Mayor and make a return to Parliament if the Treasury continues with spending cuts, particularly on Crossrail and Tube upgrade work. Mr. Johnson is said to fear a humiliating loss in 2012 if he is forced to preside over an era of slash-and-burn on transport projects, and is said to be intimating that his move back to the Commons — where he would be a particularly troubling harpoon in David Cameron's hide — could happen as soon as the next suitable by-election. A spokesperson for the Mayor's office yesterday denied that there is any threat to resign, and played down the budgetary disagreements.
