Register Now For Cycle Hire

The Barclays Cycle Hire scheme is now open for registration for those who wish to become a member.

To join, you need to be 18 and have a UK credit or debit card billing address. Fill in the form on the TfL website, select what kind of access you want (24 hour is £1 + usage, 7 day is £5, or annual is £45; full cost breakdown here), and complete a few other personal details. You’ll then be sent a key in the post (each key costs £3) to access the bikes at the docking station; see the map for the full list of stations about town. The bikes will be available to use from July 30th.

This registration is for members’ access; casual users, i.e. those who enjoy simply rocking up to a station whenever they like and hiring a cycle on the spot, won’t be able to use the bikes yet — a vague note on the website says that they’ll be available ‘soon’. Perhaps Serco (the group operating the system) want to get any teething troubles out of the way by opening it to early adopters who, by their very nature, are more likely to be familiar with cycling in London.

am i looking at or wrong or are there no docking stations on that map?

  • http://undefined Lee

Well spotted – I hadn’t seen that. Think TfL are running a bit behind on this, the site wasn’t quite live at 6am as they had said (early start to the day so I happened to find out!)

I’ve been spying the little panels in the pavement along my commuting route for a while now in preparation for signing up.

Hopefully the cycles should ease the pain of the H&C station being closed at Paddington for 3 weeks!

Yep no docking stations showing on the map yet, maybe they will not show till Friday.

I saw a van and trailer full of bikes sorting out one of the stations near Southwark the other evening.

I have registered but could not get the site to accept either of my credit cards, it just kept going to a “failed” page, only got to a “success” page by using a debit card.

  • DeanN

Hmm, that lack of docking stations is a bit ridiculous; the site is meant to be fully live now.

I also had a couple of problems registering — it seemed to reject my credit card, but then I checked the ‘account’ page and it seems the payment had gone through anyway.

  • zefrog

I have tried to register too but both my cards got rejected.. there is obviously a problem with their payment system… (hope I don’t get charged twice – which from the rahter unclear “Recent activity” list in my account seems to be what has happened… oh joy!)

  • zefrog

    I used (visa) debit cards…

  • http://undefined Ian

Yep my account activity also shows me as being charged three times (twice would be the Visa (Credit) cards that it was saying “failed” for, once would be the Visa (Debit) card that was the only way I could get to a “success” page). Oh well, will contact them next week and have them unpick their mess.

Annoyingly they seem to have used “Oyster Maths” with numerous debit and credit lines on the statement which may be technically correct but is quite difficult to read.

LBC radio just said that “over 1000 people have signed up” so far.

  • http://undefined Ian

OK, the “contact us” form is just going to “Sorry, the Barclays Cycle Hire website is currently unavailable”!!!

  • http://undefined DeanN

    Ha! Oh dear.

It was only yesterday that TfL commish Peter Hendy was warning Serco to sort themselves out. Wonder where the responsibility for this seemingly unready website lies?

  • http://www.toneknob.com iSleepDiagonal

Oh dear. “The web page at https://web.barclayscyclehire.tfl.gov.uk/member might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.”
    :(

I’ll keep polishing my helmet in the meantime

Couldn’t register as I was using a Maestro debit card and the form only seemed to accept Visa or Mastercard. I’m mighty annoyed that I will have to wait a month to use the scheme because I’m not in cahoots with the sponsors.

Is this some sort of testing ground for the disgruntlement any non-Visa card folk trying to buy tickets for the Olympics will soon feel?

  • http://undefined elyobelyob

When they said there could be issues, I hadn’t realised not actually being able to sign up would be an issue. Visa Debit and Mastercard both failed over and over again.
Agreed, the use of “Oyster Maths” is really annoying, especially as I can’t use my blooming Oyster anyway.

Registered with no problem at 0630 this morning using Visa Debit. Noticed my membership number was in the 1300′s.

  • http://undefined elyobelyob

I waited until later, as I won’t be a regular user. Didn’t want to be in the first 2000 to be honest. But still trying to register.
Also, why didn’t they just invite the first 2000 who signed up to receive more information, as I did months ago?

Registered with no dramas just a few moments ago. (Visa Debit, 24hr access)

“A small number of customers may be experiencing difficulties with the card details section of the registration form. We are fixing this now so those who have been unable to sign up today can do so successfully tomorrow. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

I received my welcome pack today with 2 keys. The enclosed leaflet says, under “What’s the benefit of becoming a member?”, “Provide family and friends access and keys of their own”.

Does this imply to anyone else that everyone with a key has to pay their own £45 + £3? Cos that’s what they mean. When I called to point out what had happened, the helpful chap said “er yes lots of people are pointing out that it’s quite misleading”

  • zefrog

After a few problems and a couple of phone calls, I have now received and activated my key (which comes with a paper map of the docking stations).

    Roll on tomorrow!

The [bank name] cycle hire site is utterly atrocious.

First, it won’t allow apostrophes in your registered name.

Second, if you input your password incorrectly it forces you to reset it. No reminder. No second chance.

The Twitter account is for announcements only. They are not responding to @replies. Very anti-social media.

And, as with a lot of other people, they don’t want my money. Upwards of 10 tries to submit payment and it keeps throwing errors.

Finally, the form to submit a complaint throws an error on trying to post it.

And no. Excuses like ‘teething problems’ and ‘overloaded with requests’ won’t wash. It’s shoddy IT.
