An occasional series in which we highlight an important social issue that the mainstream media won't touch: the plight of London's increasingly neglected toy animals.

We're receiving an increasing number of reports of toy animal maltreatment in London. Three instances in the past week alone. We can only hope that the hullabaloo around Toy Story 3 will remind people that all animals should be respected, even toy ones.

The first image comes from Heather Robertson, who tells us that this critter was "found in central london no less! on Great Marlborough Street, poor creature seemed shellshocked by the unkindness of strangers walking past. aww. i believe he was a giraffe who fell in with a punk crowd, which may explain the interesting colourscheme."

The second photo was snapped by Tony Irvine at an undisclosed London location. This bizarre image shows both a jettisoned Scooby Doo and a toy alien. Truly, this problem of neglected toys is taking on intergalactic proportions.

Finally, Andrew Barnett offers this shot from Essex Road of another animal stranded on railings - for some reason, a common place to leave toys. Look at the face. This otherwise confidently posed rabbit has just realised her owner is never coming back.

Keep your eyes and your cameras open for further examples of toy animal maltreatment, and send examples to tips@londonist.com
