Carbuncle Cup Shortlist Announced

1207_strata.jpg Nominations fThe shortlist for this year's Carbuncle Cup, given to the most loathsome new building to have cropped up around Britain over the past year, has been announced, and it features a pair of controversial London developments.

The Strata tower in Elephant & Castle, which we had a look round earlier in the year, was nominated for its "plain visual grotesqueness". It is joined on the six-strong list by a last-minute nomination: the Bézier apartment blocks that bestride Old Street roundabout, described as "offensively ugly"; the pair curvy towers are likened by the nominator, in the spirit of London's morphological obsession, to a giant arse.

The winner will be announced in August. But will any of the architects or developers involved have the moxie to do what Halle Berry did when she won a Razzie and show up to collect the award?
