Islington To Be Deflowered

Lewisham led the way with announcing cutbacks but now Boris' home borough has announced a quick win saving of £37,000, axing Islington's hanging baskets.

A blooming shame laments the Islington Gazette. Indeed, the floral adornments to Upper Street's railings helped the borough scoop a silver medal in the 2009 Britain in Bloom competition and cheer up the particularly grim junction outside Angel station. It also helped make bolting over the railings late at night and drunk when you can't be bothered to walk to the crossing that bit more challenging.

Islington Council needs to trim £7 million of expenditure in 2010-11. Sad as it is to see the hanging baskets go, it's put into perspective by plans to cut 60 council posts and pass on government's cuts to young people's services. They really should ditch Islington Now, straight away.

If you're going to miss the hanging baskets seek alternative natural remedies in our Nature-ist series and help protect your your own 'green corners' by nominating them for an award.
