To judge by the precipitation outside, it's probably not the best day to discover that the radio system used in London's ambulances tends not to work very well in the rain, at least according to the Health & Safety Executive. A HSE inspection earlier this year found that the Airwave communications system, introduced in the wake of the July 2005 terrorist bombings and used by members of the emergency services, was often beset by poor reception, particularly in heavy downpours, and according to one crew member, going without a radio is not uncommon. The London Ambulance Service has refuted the allegations, but for now, if you're planning to do yourself a mischief, best wait 'till the weather improves.
