No Netball For Me, Miss, I’m Off Free Running

If this had been an option for our PE lessons we probably wouldn’t have spent so much time down the local snooker hall* – the first purpose-built Parkour course in the UK will open at Westminster Academy in Westbourne Green by January 2011.

Designed by the Parkour Generations team, who teach and practice the sport, the course will mimic an urban landscape, with walls and stairs for pupils – and anyone else who wants to use it, presumably out of school hours – to jump around on. We could make some gag about one small leap for schoolkids, one giant leap off a railing for free running, but that would just be corny.

* This honestly happened. It was officially sanctioned, as well.

We complained about / skivved real sport so much, they ended up letting us go 10-pin bowling as part of our games lessons.

Only now does it seem totally strange that a group of teenage girls would hit the local bowling alley in our school uniforms every Thursday morning, armed with £1 for shoe hire, and think this was somehow proper physical education. Bizarre
