Opening today is the Free Fringe month of the festival: this first week is the Pantaloons presenting what sounds like a slapstick Macbeth, followed by a week of choirs including the London Gay Men's Chorus previewing their new show The Seven Deadly Sins. Week three sees Palladini Productions presenting I'm a Londoner which is an exploration of characters in the City, followed by week four which is the Offenbach opera Orpheus Down Under brought to the non-paying crowds by Unexpected Opera Company.
July is a series of free, live music in the Scoop, then August is a month of theatre double bills - Toad Hall at 6pm then Don Juan in Love at 8pm. Stay for both if your buttocks can take such prolonged application to the stone seats. Then September is the month of free outdoor films with a selection that is so tempting right now, it seems a long time to wait for this to roll around. Bag your seat early for the showings of Up In The Air, The Bourne Ultimatum, North by Northwest, Dirty Dancing and Up.
Bring something warm to wear, something soft to sit on and something to shelter under should the summer turn out to be a wet one.
