In Pictures: Brick Lane Curry Festival

Beer, curry and queuing. Yep it’s London. Throw in some Bangra beats and some heat lamps (ah summer in England) and you’ve got the Brick Lane Curry Festival. When much of London was lookin’ like a ghost town during this week’s Bank Holiday Monday, ye olde standby Truman Brewery was hopping with folk keen to sample the “best curry on Brick Lane” (see our preview here). Sponsored by Cobra beer, the Monday “mela” was meant to be a contest with a winning curry joint coming out on top. However, as one of the originally invited restos was unable to staff the event, the competition was scrapped in favour of a showcase of the restaurants that line this fabled East London street.

C’mon…best curry in Brick Lane? I’ve never had a good curry in Brick Lane – Bundu Khan’s (nearby) is good…Tayyubs and Lahore Kebab house both do good food (though not really curry houses).

The Clifton is just about passable and even then, it’s not technically Brick Lane – the whole bunch of them need to pull the socks up!

I pretty much agree with you about Brick Lane. It’s not my first destination when hankering for a good curry. Still, it was a pretty fun way to spend an afternoon and lots of folks seemed pleased to hang out there.

Sure, don’t get me wrong – it’s an outstanding area – everything but the quality of the curries is outstanding – it just seems odd that the thing that makes it famous is such a let-down. You’d think one of the curry houses would steal a march on a neighbour and make something a little better. You almost wonder if they all agree to make the quality bad and milk a captive market with no effort…which makes you wonder what would happen if anyone did try to foment a revolution. :O)

Again, I agree. I don’t think there’s any conspiracy but I do think the street’s very fame is what’s brought down the quality of its food.
