DLR Strike Days Announced

If you are likely to need the Docklands Light Railway on 23-25 June, start making other plans. Members of the RMT union are to stage a three day strike over a pay row, to coincide with another strike on the underground network. The MD of Serco, which runs the DLR, describes the move as an “opportunistic demand for cash”. Bob ‘the crowbar’ Crow says “Our members will not be bullied by management into taking on more work without being properly compensated.” The general public replies: “Oh for frack’s sake!” Image by O.F.E.

What the hell? What’s the point in an automated driverless train system if it’s still subject to these crippling, selfish strikes?

When I lived in Vancouver in 2001 there was a four-month transport worker strike. This crippled every mode of transport, with the exception of the SkyTrain, a similarly driverless light railway. The authorities simply left the gates open and kept the trains running, meaning four months of free travel for commuters.

Be nice if TfL could do similar, though I doubt it’ll ever happen.
