The Antelope, Tooting
Welcome to Dining Beyond Zone 1, our series of restaurant reviews dedicated to seeking out quality local places to dine beyond the frenzy of Central London!

At Londonist we love a hidden gem, but heading to a pub in Tooting for dinner on a tip-off we weren’t sure what to expect. Modern looking pub in sight, expectations were raised but it’s only once we slip through the main bar area and into the back room that we’re won over. Here are proper dining tables, candles and an open fire; a surprisingly exciting menu. Standard pub fare this is not. We don’t know about you, but we certainly can’t get squid stuffed with morcilla or a salsify salad in our local.

The menu changes daily so we don’t know what will be on offer when you turn up, but it will surely be seasonal, maybe local, and hopefully as good as what we had. We enjoyed a super-crispy duck leg and some amazingly tender beef in mustard gravy before moving on to a homely rhubarb crumble and an intriguing cornflake ice-cream for dessert. No, we weren’t sure about the ice-cream at first either, but there are no visible cornflakes - it’s just made from milk which cornflakes have been soaked in. If you’ve a tendency to return home to a snack of a left-over bowl of breakfast cereal (can it really just be us?) it’s one not to be missed. Still not convinced? The hazelnut ice-cream’s pretty good, too.

The Antelope is definitely a food-focused pub, but there are a good few ales on offer, and we love their selection of wine which is served in three different sizes of carafe.

All in all, we’re pretty much won over...

The Antelope is at 76 Mitcham Road, SW17 9NG a short walk from Tooting Broadway Station. See the website here.
