Seems like only yesterday that Diane Abbot was being mentioned as a potential Mayoral candidate. but the Hackney North & Stoke Newington MP has her eye on a bigger prize: she's just announced her candidacy for leader of the Labour party on Radio 4. The longstanding MP, who was elected in 1987, will offer a left-leaning alternative to the centrist, white, middle-aged males thus punting for the job, though she's not popular among all sectors of the party: many still deplore her widely-criticised decision to send her kids to private school, while the nauseating sight of her squeezed up next to Michael Portillo on This Week is hard to scrub from the memory.
