American entertainment giant AEG has emerged as one of the 106 names competing to pick up the Olympic stadium after the Games. The company's reputation as a poacher of white elephants is well established — they turned the unloved Dome into the O2, one of the world's most popular venues — and it would please Olympic chiefs and Newham council apparatchiks no end if they were able to give Stratford a similar success story. West Ham United, the other major name in the hat, remain interested, though the ever-erratic emanations from Upton Park (the chairmen recently put the entire squad up for sale) hint at a club in turmoil that might not be up for a bidding war.
