London Gets Minted

pound.jpg London has been encapsulated in monetary form as part of the Royal Mint's new series commemorating the UK's capital cities.

The pound coin, which is available to purchase from the Mint for £4.75, largely features images associated with the Corporation of the City of London, as the capital lacks a 'single heraldic emblem'. The Corporation's coat of arms: the distinctive Cross of St George accompanied by the Sword of St Paul, is the coin's dominant feature and its motto 'Domine Dirige Nos' (Lord guide us), is inscribed around the edge.

Overall, it's a fairly understated, elegant design that reflects the tradition of the Square Mile and, if you really like it, you can buy a gold proof version for a mere £595 of your boring, un-Londony pounds.
