Cycle Superhighway

Local cyclist Down and Out has been kind enough to share this first photo of the Cycle Superhighway, now guiding bicycle users past Tooting Bec Station.

Opinions remain divided on the value of these changes – we’ll be keeping an eye on this one as it works its way up to Southwark Bridge to see how it shapes up.

There is also this section of it which was being layed in the wee hours the other day near Tooting Broadway:

Surely that makes the yellow box technically unenforceable unless they’ve changed road marking law?

So, will there be wardens making sure parked vans don’t block the lanes, and issuing fines to motorists who ignore the Advanced Stop Lines? Or is Boris’s big idea making the tarmac blue instead of green? Frankly, he’d be better off spending the money completing the LCN+ network rather than starting a new half-arsed scheme of his own.

I’ve seen this in Tooting Broadway, by the junction that saw a lad killed on his way to college a year or so ago – he was crushed by a turning lorry.

This superhighway has painted the blue, removed the yellow criss-cross and more importantly ripped out the pointless railings that injur so many cyclists. All power to Boris for this.

(I’ll still jump lights this junction though as it is a very very scary one)

If the superhighways see railings and other hazards removed, then good on him- I was worried that the work might only extend to laying down some blue tarmac.
