Cycle Hire Docking Stations Mapped And Apped

London’s cycle hire scheme is due to get rolling this summer. We know about the blue bike’s ears and how your ride will be priced. We even had an inkling of where we’d be able to pick up our Borocycle. Now someone’s taken us at our word and trumped TfL by independently creating their own map of the planning permission approved docking stations.

The map provides an exciting smattering of blue dots covering Camden to Kennington, Kensington to Whitechapel and all the bits in between, giving us hope that the £1 short hops will be a reality. It also tells you the capacity of the docking stations.

Naturally, they’re beavering away on an iPhone App to help the technically tooled up cycle hirer locate their nearest ride. Which is all well and good, as long as there are wheels available for you, when you get there. Perhaps TfL will bear this in mind, when they finally catch up.

You can follow the App’s progress @cyclehireapp.

About the pricing: it actually says £45 -annually-, plus a £3 charge for a key. At that price, I’m considering just becoming a member of this scheme instead of using the Tube when I’m studying in London next semester! Another question, though. If you were to take one 25-minute trip, return the bike to a rack, then get another bike for another 25-minute trip, would each trip be free, or would you be charged the £1 for the up-to-an-hour trip? (Either way, it’s remarkably cheap.)

Camden to Kennington is stretching it a bit…none in Camden Town from the looks of the blue dots…i haz a sad! :(

None in Camden town – one on Eversholt street and Mornington Crescent station…

The data used for the iPhone app came from an FOI request to TfL for planned sites, so it may change slightly to what actually gets put in the ground. The map on the app page is a bit tidly, so I’ve put the sites onto a fullscreen map here:
