A service was held at Bethnal Green Tube Station yesterday to mark the 67th anniversary of the civilian disaster that saw 173 people die as folk stampeded underground, following an air raid siren. The campaign to put a permanent memorial on the site, where currently only a plaque commemorates the WWII tragedy, is ongoing as campaigners struggle to raise £650,000 for the 'Stairway to Heaven', which already has planning permission.
