Did you know that this is National Chip Week? Big whoop, right? Still, Londonist reckons it's a good time to start our new series about where to get the best chips in London. So, where to begin? Let's try the Covent Garden stalwart, Rock and Sole Plaice. A massive portion of chunky and golden takeaway chips sets you back £1.50 here. Dining in? That costs £3 but grants (presumably) unlimited access to some of the yummiest tartar sauce in town.

Obviously with such a playfully nautical name, proper batter fried fish is to be expected. We've not been disappointed. Luring throngs of tourists, late night drunkards and seemingly everybody else not on a diet (we've seen suit-and-tied business meetings going on in here), Rock and Sole Plaice is (perhaps not the best in London but nevertheless) a satisfactory choice for when that chippy craving hits.

Visit Rock and Sole Plaice at 45-47 Endell Street, WC2H 9AJ.
