In Pictures: London for a Secular Europe Protest

Around 300 people (mostly it seems members of the LGBT community) faced the loveless streets of London on a wintry Valentine’s Day afternoon to voice their opposition to the seemingly growing political interference of the Vatican and the Pope in European and British politics.

The protesters gathered outside Westminster Cathedral before joyfully marching all the way to the Italian Embassy in Grosvenor Square, followed by three hymn singing Catholics. At the embassy, they listened to a series of speakers of humanist and secularist persuasions listing the wrongs of the Catholic hierarchy.

This protest was taking place in solidarity with a demonstration happening in Rome and was the second of a series of protests during the year against the Pope’s state visit to the UK in the autumn.

More pictures of the protest available on flickr here.

I would just would like to comment that whilst possibly most protesters were members of the LGBT community many were not and the coalition of organisations which joined together to make this protest were, in the main, not exclusively LGBT organisations – British Humanist Association, Rationalist Association, National Secular Society, Central London Humanists, European Humanist Federation, International Humanist and Ethical Union. Between us we were representing a membership of many tens of thousands if not more. All of whom, LGBT and straight, I am confident, would be concerned to defend the human rights of all (religious, non-religious, LGBT and straight) and to support an open, secular, society free from privileged religious abuses.
    Love to all,
