Tair Salakhov, Azerbaijans most acclaimed artist who rose to prominence during the Soviet area, celebrates his life and work in a new major exhibition at Sothebys this week. From his early works of Socialist Realism to his progression as the founder of the so-called ‘Severe Style’ (thus introducing modernism to the USSR, and placing him firmly on the margins of authoritarian tolerances) his paintings have never been shown in the UK before. Colourful, bold and intense, some of the work literally stopped us in our tracks. Go see for yourself, but hurry as it’s only on until Thurs 25th Feb.
